As part of our continuing efforts to 'close the front door' to homelessness, the Tuscola Homeless Coalition participates in several federally funded programs to assists our friends and neighbors.
Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Grant (EFSG) Tuscola Homeless Coalition serves on the committee that distributes on average of $60,000 dollars a year in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds to communities inTuscola County. The Tuscola Homeless Coalition, by its intake process, disburses a portion of these funds as homeless prevention efforts.
Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) For the year 2009-2010 the Federal Government, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, granted communites in Huron, Sanilac, Lapeer, and Tuscola counties an additional $90,061. Like the EFSG, the Coalition disburses a portion of these funds as homeless prevention efforts. Both of these funding sources, FEMA and TEFAP, are administered through the Human Development Commission (HDC).
Guidelines There are minimal guidelines for qualifying for the above assistance programs and the process may take longer - up to two to three weeks - as these are government funds. These funds can only be used to prevent eviction and pay past-due rents only.
Please call the Coalition at 989.672.7674 to arrange an appointment to determine your eligibility. Be sure to visit our Program Information page before you call! Or, you can download and print our THC brochure for your convenience.
(Please note: The Coalition does not provide onsite food distribution or monies towards food purchases. Please contact the Good Samaritan Fund at 989.673.6929 or another local food pantry for these services.)
